KY Horse Weekend Trifecta!
Wow! What a full weekend of exciting horse events in Kentucky! At Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, Drosselmeyer came out of nowhere to win the $5 Million Breeder’s Cup Classic. As are all horse races, this three year old race proved to be unpredictable and exciting.
On a somewhat quieter front, but no less exciting, 200 under 18 riders from around the country competed in the AllTech National Horse Show, held for the first time at the Kentucky Horse Park just north of Lexington. Sarah Milliren, an Oklahoma teen, took the top honors. This was just another splendid event brought to the Lexington KY area, which continues to prove itself as a leader in all types of horse competitions worldwide.
Meanwhile, at a much lower profile, but equally classic, event, a small crowd gathered in a country setting south of Lexington to partake in the 2011 Iroquois Hunt Club’s “Blessing of the Hounds”. While the traditional history calls for fox hunting, these English bred hounds now have coyote in their sights. But the real emphasis seems to be the recreation of the riders, and their embodiment of this historic tradition.
On this particular day, as the season opened, all gathered for the blessing ceremony following the tradition of honoring St. Hubert, the patron saint of dogs and hunting. The ceremony is held at the Grimes Mill Road Hunt Club Lodge, and a parade of spectators followed the 30 or 40 riders up the road to the field to partake in the Huntsman’s Stirrup Cup traditional sendoff.
So much to experience in Kentucky, and so many dimensions of the horse world and traditions that come with living in the Lexington KY area.
