Lexington Does Rockefeller Center!
Lexington KY’s downtown development continues its great work on attracting people with the addition of a new skating rink in Lexington’s renovated Triangle Park. Just opened a few days ago, the rink is intended to complement the already quaint atmosphere of our downtown area, and further increase the ambiance of the city… our own little Rockefeller Center for wintertime!

According to the Business Lexington, the rink was actually purchased directly from the MGM Grand hotel-casino in Las Vegas. The Triangle Park Foundaion, established in 1980 by Alex Campbell and a group of individuals and corporations in Lexington , hired consultant Robert Zion for input. Mr. Zion has designed a number of key parks in New York City as well as the Statue of Liberty grounds and hundreds of other public spaces throughout the world.
The consultations included meeting with a group in New York City called Projects for Public Spaces, who have studied the patterns and interactions of people in public places over a number of years. Elements such as moveable tables and chairs, rather than all permanent fixtures, allow for people to “define” their space a bit more in relation to others present, which contributes to a level of personal comfort and space, leading to their overall comfort zone and repeated use of the space.
This project is yet another example of Lexington’s growing awareness of fostering the involvement of its residents in utilizing even more of the local facilities. This, along with recent completed projects like the Legacy Trail, are the likes of what continues to attract more people relocating to the Lexington KY area.
