There’s a local business in town that does some unusual recycling. Creech Hay in Lexington Ky supplies straw for horse bedding- and then re-uses it in a very creative way. For over 20 years they have been supplying mushroom farms with used hay and straw.

After it has been used in horse stalls, Creech Hay bales it and sends it to mushroom farms all across the country to use as compost. It seems the mix of moisture and manure is perfect for growing all sorts of mushrooms including button, shiitake, and portobello! The company has a fleet of trucks to pick up used hay from large horse farms, with a drop-off location for properties with less than 70 horses. Creech also has a large composting operation that provides the key ingredients for special fertilizers and mulches that they sell commercially.

Creech Hay has been in business for over 30 years and started out selling hay and straw, which it still does. In fact, it ships hay to horse farms across Europe and in the Middle East. The company enjoys a solid reputation for providing high quality hay to Thoroughbred race horses around the world. (In case you did not know, straw is used for animal bedding and is the stalk of the plant (usually wheat or rye) while hay is used for food.)

Creech Hay in Lexington Ky is located in the Thoroughbred Training Center off of Paris Pike, with composting operations off of Hedger Lane.

Last week I wrote about horse feed, so I guess it’s only fitting that I wrote about horse manure today!
