Did you know you don’t have to live in the country to have chickens? There are some urban neighborhoods in Lexington that allow hen houses- and there’s even a website and Facebook page celebrating our backyard farmers. Hen houses don’t take up much room- and nothing beats fresh eggs!
Raising chickens and collecting eggs are a fun, easy way to get into farming. Chickens can stay outside year round and require minimal care when compared with other farm animals. The whole family can get involved with feeding the chickens- and collecting the eggs. Chickens are cheap to buy and cheap to raise. After all, when something is inexpensive we often say it was only chicken feed!
When setting up a place for your chickens, make sure they are protected from predators such as raccoons. The hen house should provide shelter and be raised so they can gather under it as well. Also make sure that they will not run off into your neighbor’s yards.
To learn more about raising chickens go to CluckLex.org. You can also connect with other backyard chicken farmers on their Facebook page. CluckLex usually has an annual tour of local chicken coops as well.
Keeping chickens in Lexington is legal, but you will need to check with your neighborhood association before getting your own coop. I know of several neighborhoods that allow hen houses, both downtown and in the suburbs. Some Lexington urban chicken keepers can be found downtown, in Aylesford, Kenwick, Bell Court and other areas. Other neighborhoods include Glendover, Pickway, Carriage Lane, Joyland (Kingston), and Shadeland. Click the links to see current homes for sale and then contact me to schedule a showing.
Remember, just because your neighbor has chickens does not mean the home owners association allows them. Be sure to check the restrictions first.
