Lucky’s Market in Lexington Ky opened last week. The organic grocery store is near the southern edge of downtown close to the University of Kentucky campus. The company spent over $800,000 renovating an old Winn Dixie store that had been vacant for years. Revitalizing old buildings is in keeping with Lucky’s mission of giving back to each location’s community.
The store boasts high quality locally sourced produce, fresh meats, and great selection in all the other departments including dairy, bakery, deli and liquor departments. With an emphasis on fresh, the mozzarella cheese for the pizzas in the deli is made in-house, and they even make their own bacon. There’s also a big focus on having fun while shopping at Lucky’s Market. There’s lot of hoopla and giveaways- which may or may not die down in time. If you were there at the actual grand opening you saw that instead of a ribbon cutting they had a bacon cutting! In another novel twist, customers can stop by the cafe and grab a beer to enjoy while cruising the aisles- something they refer to as “sip and stroll.”
Employees at the market are expected to have some cooking expertise so they can offer preparation ideas and helpful tips to customers. They are generally courteous, helpful and engaging. Everything at the market is designed to be a feast for the eyes with attractive shelf displays everywhere you look.
Based in Colorado, Lucky’s Market was founded in 2003 and is now in eleven states. Their community-based philosophy means that they are committed to at least 10% of their produce being locally sourced. And employees are paid for up to 32 hours of volunteer work per year. The store is located at 1030 South Broadway.
