Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah was not the only one to prove himself a true champion of champions at Saturday’s Breeder’s Cup Classic. No matter what horse you may have been betting on, one has to admit that American Pharoah is truly one-of-a-kind, as he made history on Saturday at Lexington’s Keeneland Race Track for this historic event, leading this race from start to finish and topping his Triple Crown victory with this ‘grand slam’ race of races win.

Yet another big winner, not to be ignored, was Lexington Ky itself. Yes, Lexington! American Pharoah and Lexington KY are truly Champions in how they showed up this past week at the Breeder’s Cup Classic! Not only did Keeneland Race Track handle and manage record crowds of over 50,000 attendees, bringing in extra manpower, structures and support of all kinds, the entire city of Lexington proved to be a champion in hosting this memorable week of events.

Keeneland and Lexington rose to the occasion with the hospitality and personal flavor and response more of a large town than a big city. Events capturing the local vibe included bourbon tastings, horse farm tours, art exhibits, and homegrown music performances. The personal touch that makes Lexington Ky such a special place was evident all around the city. Food, festivity and fun all blended together in this memorable event.

And now, back to the main star of the show, American Pharoah!  Listen to this crowd on a short clip I took, as it welcomed the champion of champions after his five plus length win:

After personally living in both small towns (700 was my low population record) and large cities (Atlanta with approximately 4 million), and some in between, I can truly say that the ‘large town’ flavor of Lexington is truly unique in its offerings.  Yes, both American Pharoah and Lexington KY are truly Champions! in their fields! Here’s a couple of folks who really know how to enjoy what Lexington Ky has to offer…why not join us?

Lexington Ky, the Horse Capital of the World!

Horse capital of the world photo

Horse capital of the world photo Horses, as I mentioned in my list of Top Ten Reasons to Move to Lexington, Ky, are a big part of what makes Lexington so special. We have a wonderful horse culture here- whether you just like looking at them as you drive by, or if you ride, compete, show, work in the horse industry, or bet on the races. There are many opportunities to connect with horses. Here is another one: Locust Trace AgriScience Farm is  a career and technical school for high school students. They have an Equine Studies program where students get high school credit while working hands-on with horses. One of the horses became the subject of a science fair project earlier this year. It was sick and several students monitored its glucose levels while studying the effects of a new supplement to its diet. The school is located on an 80 acre farm that includes fences, pastures, a veterinary clinic, indoor arena, and stables. In addition to Equine Science and Veterinary Studies, Locust Trace also offers classes centered around environmental science, biotechnology, farm animal science, and agricultural machinery. It’s a great way to introduce kids to a career working with horses, or in the agricultural industry. You can help by volunteering your time. Learn more about Locust Trace AgriScience Farm here. If you would like to closer to be horses, perhaps you are like many people who would like to find a Kentucky horse farm for sale. Lexington is a great place to center your search. They don’t call Lexington Ky, the Horse Capital of the World for nothing! The city is surrounded by rolling hills and horse farms. Costco is just one more reason to move to Lexington Ky

Costco opened its newest store in Lexington Ky on Friday. This is good news because Costco pays its employees well above the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. The average Costco employee makes over $20 an hour. This translates into an economic boost for Lexington as that income will ripple out into our economy. Costco also attracts high income customers. The typical Costco customer makes about $100,000 a year and is a small business owner. Costco customers are extremely loyal and many will drive from afar to shop at Costco.

Costco is the second largest retailer in the United States (Wal-Mart is first) and is a membership club warehouse. Membership is just $55 a year. They sell high volume at low cost. In addition to great deals, they are known for keeping their warehouses clean, and for having an easy refund policy. In the past five years, Costco has been experiencing a surge of success. This is especially notable in a time where many bricks and mortar retailers are losing business to Internet shopping.

If you are one of those people driving hours to shop at Costco, perhaps you are ready to move to Lexington Ky.

There is plenty of other shopping all around Costco in the Hamburg area. And also lots of great neighborhoods, including Greenbrier, which I wrote about here. Costco is convenient to just about any area in Lexington. I will be happy to show you around Lexington and tell you about area schools and employers. I look forward to helping you move to Lexington so you can enjoy all that we have to offer.

An Exciting Time to be Moving to Lexington Ky

Tourists are flocking to Kentucky’s bourbon distilleries.

It’s a great time to be living in Lexington Kentucky and the surrounding Central Kentucky area. One big reason is the area’s bourbon industry. In a word, it is exploding. Since 95% of the world’s bourbon is made in Kentucky, we offer something no one else can, and thus attract a significant number of tourists from across the U.S. and around the world. Lexington area residents have good reason to be proud of all the good things bourbon tourism brings to our economy. There are about eighteen bourbon distilleries in the state, and most have visitor centers and gift shops, as well as offer tours.

Seven distilleries are part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a way to connect visitors with distilleries. Visitors who collect all seven passport stamps receive a free tee shirt. The route is about 200 miles and visitors are instructed to plan a few days to see them all. Last year, 500,000 people visited at least one of those seven, with 18,000 completing the Trail. Those 18,000 people typically stay at least one night in a Kentucky hotel or bed & breakfast, and spend an average of $737 per person.

The growth rate of the bourbon tourism industry has been booming and is expected to continue to do so. The money spent by the tourists ripples through Kentucky’s economy and indirectly benefit Kentucky residents. Read more about Kentucky Bourbon Life, also the source of the above statistics.

There are also many bourbon-themed events such as the Bourbon Chase, which is a run along the Bourbon Trail, bourbon festivals, tastings, and even cooking classes.

If  you’d like to be part of all this excitement, consider moving to Lexington Ky. I would love to help you in your search for a new home.

This is a great time of year to buy a home. If this will be your first home, I will be happy to help guide you through the process. There are many advantages to home ownership. The most obvious one is that your home is an investment. You can deduct your mortgage interest on your taxes, as well as some improvements you make to your home. In many cases, it is cheaper to own than to rent.

Owning a home gives you the freedom to make improvements to your liking. And you have the security of being free from rent increases and lease terminations.

As your Realtor, I can help you with finding, negotiating, and buying a home in Lexington Ky and the surrounding areas. I know the area neighborhoods, school systems, and amenities. I stay current with first time home buyer programs and creative financing options. I can save you hours of time by helping you refine your search for a new home. My 25 + years of real estate experience will come in handy when determining your market search price range, opening offer, and negotiation strategies. I can also save you money with advice on how to structure your offer that is most advantageous to you. As with all of my clients, I am available to assist you through the whole (or any  part of the) process of buying a home from start to finish including walking you through the search, negotiation, financing, home inspection, and the closing.

Now is  a great time to be a home buyer in Lexington Ky. I look forward to working with you in buying your first home.
