Broomwagon in Lexington Ky

I am continually amazed by the diversity of local businesses in town. Now there’s a store that combines bike repair with food and drink! Here’s the scoop on Broomwagon in Lexington Ky:

Broomwagon is not your typical bicycle shop by any means. They sell new bicycles and offer repair service with a twist. They know that many cyclists are commuters and need their bikes right away. In offering “service while you wait” they created a combination bike shop/cafe/beer garden. The store opened last year and has a bar at the repair station so customers can enjoy a brew while watching the mechanic at work. There is a courtyard as well where patrons can enjoy soups, salads, wraps, and tamales from an ever-changing menu. Brunch is served on weekends and features a waffle-omelette combo! Regular breakfast is served daily and features wraps, cinnamon rolls and croissants. Milkshakes are also on the menu.

The shop has a coffee shop vibe and the community is welcome to hang out. There are weekly open mic nights and group events. Recent happenings include a tweed-themed bike ride, a country music concert, a heavy metal show, and even bike roller racing. Another weekly event is the Monday night jam sessions where participants are invited to bring their instrument and make some music.

The retail side of the business sells new bikes including commuter models, accessories, tee shirts and much more. By the way, “broomwagon”  is the name of the vehicle that picks up stragglers who are unable to finish a bicycle race. The store is located on North Limestone Street on the northeast corner of Loudon Avenue. This is a hip, happening area of town with new businesses opening and even a regular night market event. Currently the area includes a couple restaurants, an independent bookstore, a vintage arcade, donut shop, hair salon, and a local bar. More stuff is happening in the near future!

Residents who live near Broomwagon in Lexington Ky can walk to local shops, a drug store, a park and even a pretty spectacular climbing and fitness gym. Homes for sale in the area are at every price point up to $625,000. Neighborhoods within a half mile of the bicycle shop include Fayette Park, downtown, Arlington, and Meadows. Many of these homes would be ideal for real estate investors or first time home buyers.

Lucky’s Market in Lexington Ky

Lucky’s Market in Lexington Ky opened last week. The organic grocery store is near the southern edge of downtown close to the University of Kentucky campus. The company spent over $800,000 renovating an old Winn Dixie store that had been vacant for years. Revitalizing old buildings is in keeping with Lucky’s mission of giving back to each location’s community.

The store boasts high quality locally sourced produce, fresh meats, and great selection in all the other departments including dairy, bakery, deli and liquor departments. With an emphasis on fresh, the mozzarella cheese for the pizzas in the deli is made in-house, and they even make their own bacon. There’s also a big focus on having fun while shopping at Lucky’s Market. There’s lot of hoopla and giveaways- which may or may not die down in time. If you were there at the actual grand opening you saw that instead of a ribbon cutting they had a bacon cutting! In another novel twist, customers can stop by the cafe and grab a beer to enjoy while cruising the aisles- something they refer to as “sip and stroll.”

Have you heard about the Apiary in Lexington Ky?

Have you heard about the Apiary in Lexington Ky?

Driving down Jefferson Street recently, I was intrigued by some beautiful wrought iron fencing. The entrance had an elaborate wood door that revealed a new brick building. I later learned that the property belongs to a new catering and event business. The Apiary opened last year after constructing a 15,500 square foot place with a commercial kitchen and upscale dining room surrounded by attractive gardens.

The interior space can seat up to 135 people and features two rooms for private parties, events, and weddings. One room is 2000 square foot that is dominated by a 10 foot by 30 foot skylight and 18 foot windows, while the other is half that size and overlooks a stone terrace. There is enough space in the garden to accommodate a tent, along with the two stone fountains. All of it is contained within brick and stone courtyard walls. The outdoor space was beautifully designed by award-winning garden designer Jon Carloftis, who has created some unique gardens in and around Lexington and New York City. was recently featured in Southern Living Magazine,  and is holding a series of lifestyle events starting soon with one at Keeneland in April.

There are also raised vegetable and herb beds so that the owner, a professional chef, can cook with the freshest ingredients. He expects to share his kitchen with other chefs who need a temporary place in which to create. As I wrote about recently, Lexington is growing in, not out, by re-purposing underused urban land. Here’s a prime example as the site was previously occupied by the remnants of a building that was gutted by a fire back in 2008.

The Apiary in Lexington Ky is so named because it expects to become a hive of activity. This end of Jefferson Street, between Main and Third Streets is certainly thriving! The street is currently experiencing a vibrant new energy, as was very apparent by the Soirée last September, a street festival that attracted several thousand people. Other businesses in this section include Stella’s Deli, The Grey Goose, The Blue Heron, Enoteca, Nick Ryan’s, and Wine + Market.

If you are looking for a home for sale in Lexington Ky, consider this happening part of town. Just 1/3 mile from Broadway, you would be able to walk to Triangle Park, Rupp Arena, the Opera House, and many more bars and restaurants. There are 25 homes for sale within a half mile of Jefferson & 2nd streets, ranging from $39,000 to $1,999,900. Most are in downtown, while some are in Douglas Heights. Contact me to learn more and schedule a showing.

L’Escalade is located at 916 North Broadway near Legends Stadium, inside New Circle Road, and convenient to both downtown and I-64 & I-75. This area which includes North Limestone has been attracting new businesses, while nearby neighborhoods are seeing interest from real estate investors and first time home buyers. Contact me to learn more.

By the way, the owners of the new climbing center are a married couple  who chose Lexington to build their dream gym- even though they were living in California. According to an interview in Climbing Business Journal, they chose Lexington because:

  • Red River Gorge, a climbing mecca, is just one hour away.
  • The city is large enough and active enough to support a gym of this kind.
  • Land and labor prices are reasonable.
  • Lexington “is a place where we’d be happy to raise a family [and] it has access to the lifestyle we want to lead.”

Their reasons just make me that much more excited to help people who are moving to Lexington KY. In fact this should probably be added to my Top Ten Reasons for moving to Lexington KY!  If you live here or are planning to move here and need help finding your next home, contact me, and we’ll make it both an educational and Fun adventure!

Top Ten Reasons to Move to Downtown Lexington Ky!

top ten reasons to move to lexington ky

move to downtown lexington

Lately I’ve met several folks who live in the city center and they all just rave about their experience and then list many positives. If you are considering moving here from out of town or just in from the suburbs you may be interested in learning more about life in our metro area. Here are the top ten reasons to move to downtown Lexington Ky:

There’s a certain (1) energy and vibrancy when living in the center of town. It’s like living in the heartbeat of the city. Here, you can feel the excitement of so much going on and feel a part of the action. Downtown is sandwiched between Transylvania University to the north and the University of Kentucky college campus to the south. The thousands of students and employees of both schools contribute to the steady thrum of activity  in the area. Concerts, events, theater and live performances are all nearby as well as many bars and clubs offering live music and dancing. Between the university related productions and events such as Downtown Lexington Corporation’s Thursday Night Live Series, there is a steady stream of entertainment choices.

Being in the heart of all this activity means that you’ll have a (2) better social life, as more friends will drop by and visit before a show. Your centrally-located home can be the meeting spot when gathering groups for a night on the town!

The fact that (3) you can walk everywhere to just about everything you need is a huge plus and is the first thing most downtown residents mention. In a one-mile radius of downtown (15 minutes on foot) city dwellers can attend shows and events at  Kentucky Theater, Rupp Arena, the Opera House, ballet, symphony, concerts, live theater, and a select from a full menu of restaurants from casual to fine dining. Daily living is easy with banks, the post office, library, FedEx and a UPS store, the Morris Book Shop, the courthouse and government offices all just a short stroll from your door. Shorty’s Market provides a wide variety of fresh foods to pick up a quick meal or last minute items for the pantry. When the construction of a remodeled Kroger grocery is finished, all of your errands can be completed without ever even getting in your car! If you want still more exercise, there is a YMCA branch on High Street, LA Fitness on Main, several boutique gyms around, and even aerial yoga at The Mix.

Did you know that (4) people who live downtown are healthier than those who live in the suburbs? There’s a recent study that shows the fact they get out and walk more than others is a big plus for their health.

I would think that mental well-being is also a factor. People who live in urban areas (5) feel more connected to their community. Residents of downtown are more likely to know their neighbors than those that live in the suburbs. Isolation is more common when suburbanites arrive at home and glide into their attached garages without any interaction with those that live nearby. Downtown you’ll meet your neighbors walking your dog, at the farmers market, or at quaint places like The Juicery.

Those that live far from downtown are more likely to visit shopping malls, chains, and big box stores rather than locally-owned businesses. As an urbanite, you can feel good about supporting our economy when you (6) shop local at unique places like the Bella Rose Boutique, Stuart Mercer’s Gentleman’s Shoppe  and The Square (formerly Victorian Square). Dine at one of the dozens of locally-owned Lexington Ky restaurants located in the city center including  Common Grounds Coffee HouseVillage Host, Portofino, Wines on Vine and Joe Bologna’s.

And of course using less gas is (7)  good for the environment and (8) saves you money as well!

Think there’s not enough green space downtown? Well, think again! (9) Enjoy the public parks including Thoroughbred Park, Gratz Park, and Woodland Park. Visit other public spaces such as the 20-acre grounds and gardens of the Henry Clay Estate and the amazing Lexington National Cemetery.

An 800-acre setting that is very park-like is the (10) University of Kentucky campus. Just one-third of a mile from Main Street, the UK campus is convenient for many residents. Locals can walk or bike to classes (with a wide range of free courses, forums, lectures, and events offered to the public) as well as to all sorts of athletic events, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Singletary Center for the Arts. Singletary is known for its high quality performances, and often noted for its lack of adequate parking. If you live downtown you won’t have to deal with that! Remember, that Lexington also has a good bus and trolley public transit system, too!

Homes and condos for sale in downtown Lexington including the UK area currently range from $80,000 to over a million. Homes on the lower range of the scale are good for first time homebuyers as well as rental property investors. Neighborhoods to check out include Downtown, Equestrian View, Fayette Park, Gratz ParkAyelsford, Uk Campus and more.

The Patterson Office Tower on the University of Kentucky campus

homes for sale near university of kentucky

The Patterson Office Tower looms over the horizon when approaching Lexington from Winchester Road/ S. R. 60.

Approach Lexington from just about any direction and you’ll see the Patterson Office Tower just south of downtown. Not part of the Lexington city skyline, this white 20-story rectangular structure peaks over South Hill just beyond downtown. While the more famous Lexington Financial Center is the tallest building in town, the Patterson Office Tower is in a respectable fifth place.

Built in 1968 the skyscraper is located on the University of Kentucky campus and provides faculty office space, meeting and conference rooms, and many other administrative services primarily for the College of Arts and Sciences.

The building is named after James Patterson who was the president of the university from 1869 to 1910. Although the 249-foot tower appears to tower over the area, it is not the tallest building on campus. It only seems that way because it is perched on a high hill.

If you lived within sight of the Patterson Office Tower in Lexington Ky, you would be within walking distance to all of what UK has to offer. In addition to classes, which senior citizens may audit for free, the university offers a fine art museum and an acclaimed center for the arts. When you visit the Patterson Office Tower, don’t forget to stop by the Intermezzo Cafe on the mezzanine level…and be sure to check out the unbelievable view from the 18th floor!

Most homes for sale near the University of Kentucky are historic homes, investment rental property, and modern condos.  Click on the link to view available properties and then contact me for more information.
