An update on the Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky

Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky
Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky

The Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky is a MAJOR new mall under construction.

We’ve written about the Summit at Fritz Farm before. This is a MAJOR shopping mall under construction on the south side of town. Here’s the latest:

This newest shopping plaza is along the retail corridor of Nicholasville Road. Beginning about two miles south of the University of Kentucky campus, this area includes the Mall at Lexington Green and Fayette Mall. Construction began on the Summit at Fritz Farm in October with the clearing of farmland at the site, located at the corner of Nicholasville Road and Man O’ War Boulevards.

Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky

Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky

The large development includes 280,000 square feet of retail space, a 306-unit condo complex, a boutique hotel, and 40,000 square feet of office space. The outdoor mall is expected to in March 2017 and will feature a Whole Foods, Pottery Barn, Shake Shack, Lily Rain, and more. A food hall will serve as the entertainment center of the development complete with a brewery and a stage for live bands. The Summit is proud to be the first major mall in the region showcasing local restaurants, not just national chains. Area talent who will be leasing space include Toa Green of Crank and Boom ice cream, Ilias Pappas of Athenian Grill and Ouita Michel of Holly Hill.

The developers of the new mall targeted this area because of the high average household income in the area. While Lexington has an average household income of nearly $50,000, the residents near the mall have an average household income of over $73,000. There are homes in a wide range of price points that are convenient to the mall, and homeowners take advantage of living in a great part of town.

In addition to being close to all that shopping, residents are just six miles from the center of town and less than five miles from the University of Kentucky campus. Man O’ War Boulevard is an east-west connector linking the airport to the west to Hamburg shopping and I-75 in the east. Just behind the Fayette Mall is the 176-acre Shillito Park with walking trails, tennis courts, baseball fields and more.

Homes for sale near the Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington Ky range from $105,000 to over $300,000 and can be found in Glasford, Southpoint, Willow Bend, Blueberry Hill, Devondale, Cobblestone, Pickway, Waveland Estates, and Waterford. Broomwagon in Lexington Ky

I am continually amazed by the diversity of local businesses in town. Now there’s a store that combines bike repair with food and drink! Here’s the scoop on Broomwagon in Lexington Ky:

Broomwagon is not your typical bicycle shop by any means. They sell new bicycles and offer repair service with a twist. They know that many cyclists are commuters and need their bikes right away. In offering “service while you wait” they created a combination bike shop/cafe/beer garden. The store opened last year and has a bar at the repair station so customers can enjoy a brew while watching the mechanic at work. There is a courtyard as well where patrons can enjoy soups, salads, wraps, and tamales from an ever-changing menu. Brunch is served on weekends and features a waffle-omelette combo! Regular breakfast is served daily and features wraps, cinnamon rolls and croissants. Milkshakes are also on the menu.

Another weekly event is the Monday night jam sessions where participants are invited to bring their instrument and make some music.

The retail side of the business sells new bikes including commuter models, accessories, tee shirts and much more. By the way, “broomwagon”  is the name of the vehicle that picks up stragglers who are unable to finish a bicycle race. The store is located on North Limestone Street on the northeast corner of Loudon Avenue. This is a hip, happening area of town with new businesses opening and even a regular night market event. Currently the area includes a couple restaurants, an independent bookstore, a vintage arcade, donut shop, hair salon, and a local bar. More stuff is happening in the near future!

Nothing beats a hot bowl of soup after being out in the cold all day. There are some great places to get soup in town including Caldo in Lexington Ky. This new business that opened last year is part of a big nutrition craze that’s all about bone broth. People in LA and New York are drinking it for better health and there are even broth stands in Central Park. Caldo is locally owned by a well-known chef and caterer who also owns Wild Thyme, a popular gourmet cooking shop.

The broth shop is located in the booming Warehouse Block shopping district just east of downtown. This recently renovated area is full of small locally owned businesses including National Provisions French bakery, market and beer hall (formally National Boulangerie), Designs Unlimited Jewelry, a trumpet maker, Breakout Games, Locals bar, and many more.
