Broomwagon in Lexington Ky

I am continually amazed by the diversity of local businesses in town. Now there’s a store that combines bike repair with food and drink! Here’s the scoop on Broomwagon in Lexington Ky:

Broomwagon is not your typical bicycle shop by any means. They sell new bicycles and offer repair service with a twist. They know that many cyclists are commuters and need their bikes right away. In offering “service while you wait” they created a combination bike shop/cafe/beer garden. The store opened last year and has a bar at the repair station so customers can enjoy a brew while watching the mechanic at work. There is a courtyard as well where patrons can enjoy soups, salads, wraps, and tamales from an ever-changing menu. Brunch is served on weekends and features a waffle-omelette combo! Regular breakfast is served daily and features wraps, cinnamon rolls and croissants. Milkshakes are also on the menu.

The shop has a coffee shop vibe and the community is welcome to hang out. There are weekly open mic nights and group events. Recent happenings include a tweed-themed bike ride, a country music concert, a heavy metal show, and even bike roller racing. Another weekly event is the Monday night jam sessions where participants are invited to bring their instrument and make some music.

The retail side of the business sells new bikes including commuter models, accessories, tee shirts and much more. By the way, “broomwagon”  is the name of the vehicle that picks up stragglers who are unable to finish a bicycle race. The store is located on North Limestone Street on the northeast corner of Loudon Avenue. This is a hip, happening area of town with new businesses opening and even a regular night market event. Currently the area includes a couple restaurants, an independent bookstore, a vintage arcade, donut shop, hair salon, and a local bar. More stuff is happening in the near future!

Residents who live near Broomwagon in Lexington Ky can walk to local shops, a drug store, a park and even a pretty spectacular climbing and fitness gym. Homes for sale in the area are at every price point up to $625,000. Neighborhoods within a half mile of the bicycle shop include Fayette Park, downtown, Arlington, and Meadows. Some of these products include belts, pet leashes and collars, and a variety of leather book covers. Lucky’s Market in Lexington Ky

Lucky’s Market in Lexington Ky opened last week. The organic grocery store is near the southern edge of downtown close to the University of Kentucky campus. The company spent over $800,000 renovating an old Winn Dixie store that had been vacant for years. Revitalizing old buildings is in keeping with Lucky’s mission of giving back to each location’s community.

The store boasts high quality locally sourced produce, fresh meats, and great selection in all the other departments including dairy, bakery, deli and liquor departments. With an emphasis on fresh, the mozzarella cheese for the pizzas in the deli is made in-house, and they even make their own bacon. There’s also a big focus on having fun while shopping at Lucky’s Market. There’s lot of hoopla and giveaways- which may or may not die down in time. If you were there at the actual grand opening you saw that instead of a ribbon cutting they had a bacon cutting! In another novel twist, customers can stop by the cafe and grab a beer to enjoy while cruising the aisles- something they refer to as “sip and stroll.”

Do you know about the urban chicken keepers in Lexington Ky?

urban chicken keepers in lexington ky
Do you urban chicken keepers in Lexington Ky

Have you heard about the urban chicken keepers in Lexington Ky?

Did you know you don’t have to live in the country to have chickens? There are some urban neighborhoods in Lexington that allow hen houses- and there’s even a website and Facebook page celebrating our backyard farmers. Hen houses don’t take up much room- and nothing beats fresh eggs!

Raising chickens and collecting eggs are a fun, easy way to get into farming. Chickens can stay outside year round and require minimal care when compared with other farm animals. The whole family can get involved with feeding the chickens- and collecting the eggs. Chickens are cheap to buy and cheap to raise. After all, when something is inexpensive we often say it was only chicken feed!

When setting up a place for your chickens, make sure they are protected from predators such as raccoons. The hen house should provide shelter and be raised so they can gather under it as well. Also make sure that they will not run off into your neighbor’s yards.

To learn more about raising chickens go to CluckLex.org. You can also connect with other backyard chicken farmers on their Facebook page. CluckLex usually has an annual tour of local chicken coops as well.

Keeping chickens in Lexington is legal, but you will need to check with your neighborhood association before getting your own coop. I know of several neighborhoods that allow hen houses, both downtown and in the suburbs. Some Lexington urban chicken keepers can be found downtown, in Aylesford, Kenwick, Bell Court and other areas. Other neighborhoods include Glendover, Pickway, Carriage Lane, Joyland (Kingston), and Shadeland. Click the links to see current homes for sale and then contact me to schedule a showing.

Remember, just because your neighbor has chickens does not mean the home owners association allows them. Be sure to check the restrictions first.

And if backyard farming leaves you wanting more, consider buying a home in the country with acreage or even a horse farm. Here’s my link to Kentucky Horse Farms, Land, and Properties for Sale.

American Pharoah and Lexington KY are truly Champions!

America
America

American Pharoah in Breeder’s Cup Winner’s Circle  -Photo by Jill Robb

Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah was not the only one to prove himself a true champion of champions at Saturday’s Breeder’s Cup Classic. No matter what horse you may have been betting on, one has to admit that American Pharoah is truly one-of-a-kind, as he made history on Saturday at Lexington’s Keeneland Race Track for this historic event, leading this race from start to finish and topping his Triple Crown victory with this ‘grand slam’ race of races win.

Yet another big winner, not to be ignored, was Lexington Ky itself. Yes, Lexington! American Pharoah and Lexington KY are truly Champions in how they showed up this past week at the Breeder’s Cup Classic! Not only did Keeneland Race Track handle and manage record crowds of over 50,000 attendees, bringing in extra manpower, structures and support of all kinds, the entire city of Lexington proved to be a champion in hosting this memorable week of events.

Keeneland and Lexington rose to the occasion with the hospitality and personal flavor and response more of a large town than a big city. Events capturing the local vibe included bourbon tastings, horse farm tours, art exhibits, and homegrown music performances. The personal touch that makes Lexington Ky such a special place was evident all around the city. Food, festivity and fun all blended together in this memorable event.

And now, back to the main star of the show, American Pharoah!  Listen to this crowd on a short clip I took, as it welcomed the champion of champions after his five plus length win:

After personally living in both small towns (700 was my low population record) and large cities (Atlanta with approximately 4 million), and some in between, I can truly say that the ‘large town’ flavor of Lexington is truly unique in its offerings.  Yes, both American Pharoah and Lexington KY are truly Champions! in their fields! Here’s a couple of folks who really know how to enjoy what Lexington Ky has to offer…why not join us?
