Construction continues as part of a $7 million expansion at Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

A new 25,000 square foot brewhouse is being built atop of existing buildings at Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

Bourbon is known around the world as a Kentucky product (95% of all bourbon is made here) and the Bourbon Trail is popular with tourists from both near and far. Did you know that many of these same tourists are also visiting local breweries? The craft beer movement is growing strong and we happen to have at least six local breweries in town, referred to as “The Brewgrass Trail.” Here’s the scoop on our first craft brewery,  Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky:

Their official name is Alltech Lexington Brewery and Distilling and they make ten beers and four bourbons. The company is located on the corner of Maxwell and Oliver Lewis Parkway. As you can see by these pictures there’s lots of construction going on.

The downtown brewery opened in 2000 with the launch of Kentucky Ale. Kentucky Light soon followed and in 2006 Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale was introduced. All three beers have won awards and are distributed across Kentucky and into surrounding states. In 2012, the $4.5 million distillery opened. The 20,000 facility produces and stores Pearce Lyon Reserve, Town Branch Reserve, and Town Branch Rye. They also make Bluegrass Sundown: a unique bourbon-infused coffee concentrate. The facility is one of the very few “brewstilleries” in the world, with both brewing and distillery production happening at the same place!

This latest construction is part of a $7.5 million expansion. A new 25,000 square foot brewhouse is being built on top of existing buildings. Lots of glass is incorporated in the design so people driving by can see the processing tanks.

Tours are seven days a week and last about an hour. The standard tour includes a tasting. There are also specialty tours led by the Master Brewer, Master Distiller, or both. These private group tours provide an in-depth look at each step of the process.

Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky is located on Cross Street off of Maxwell on the west side of town. Residents who live in the area can walk to Rupp Arena, the thriving Jefferson Street corridor (see my recent post about the Apiary and the Jefferson Street area), and the arts and entertainment district of downtown. Homes for sale within walking distance of the brewstillery can be found in the Downtown and Woodward Heights neighborhoods.

My dog Maggie loves to visit the Bluegrass Barkery in Lexington Ky

Have you visited the Bluegrass Barkery in Lexington Ky? One of my favorite things to do with my dog is to take her to this locally-owned pet store. This family-owned business puts an emphasis on providing healthy food for cats and dogs. Pet owners can browse a wide selection of gourmet canned foods, top-end dry kibble, and even raw diets, which are sold frozen.

The Bluegrass Barkery in Lexington Ky makes homemade treats.

And the staff will even customize a recipe just for your pup!

Moving to Lexington Ky? There’s lots to do here!

101813lotstodo

If you are moving to Lexington, I’ll bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised with all there is to do here. Lexington is not too big that it’s a hassle to get around (in fact you can get just about anywhere in 20 minutes or less- even at 5pm on  a Friday afternoon!). And Lexington is not so small that there’s nothing to do.  Here’s just a sample of what’s happening this weekend:

Keeneland is open. We are in the middle of our Fall Meet and the track is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is College day and current students can register for a chance to win scholarships and other prizes.

Friday night is a gala benefiting Blue Grass Farms which will be held at Marriott Griffin Gate. Equus Run Vineyards has an event called Ribeyes and Red which features steak, wine and jazz. Every night this weekend the Kentucky Horse Park campground is hosting a Halloween Campout. Les Miserables is being presented each night at Lexington Opera House.

On Saturday there are several runs including a zombie run. And there is a 24-mile round trip bike ride from Paris to Lexington and back. This will be held on scenic Paris Pike (voted one of the top 10 Rand McNally scenic drives in the nation). They will be closing one lane in each direction so you could choose to bike as far as you like along the gentle rolling hills of the route, before turning around—if you don’t feel up to biking the whole route. Paris is just 15 minutes north of downtown Lexington and this is the first time for the Tour de Paris.  For something less strenuous than running or biking, try a guided walking tour of historic Lexington Cemetery on Sunday, where you will see Civil War-era graves and tombstones.

And since it’s October, you will also find plenty of Halloween-themed activities such as haunted houses and corn mazes. Have a great weekend!

Be sure to set aside some time this weekend to house hunt. If you are moving to Lexington Ky or looking to buy or sell a home in the area, I’d love to be your Realtor!
