Have you heard about the urban chicken keepers in Lexington Ky?

Did you know you don’t have to live in the country to have chickens? There are some urban neighborhoods in Lexington that allow hen houses- and there’s even a website and Facebook page celebrating our backyard farmers. Hen houses don’t take up much room- and nothing beats fresh eggs!

Raising chickens and collecting eggs are a fun, easy way to get into farming. Chickens can stay outside year round and require minimal care when compared with other farm animals. The whole family can get involved with feeding the chickens- and collecting the eggs. Chickens are cheap to buy and cheap to raise. After all, when something is inexpensive we often say it was only chicken feed!

When setting up a place for your chickens, make sure they are protected from predators such as raccoons. The hen house should provide shelter and be raised so they can gather under it as well. Also make sure that they will not run off into your neighbor’s yards.

To learn more about raising chickens go to CluckLex.org. You can also connect with other backyard chicken farmers on their Facebook page. CluckLex usually has an annual tour of local chicken coops as well.

Keeping chickens in Lexington is legal, but you will need to check with your neighborhood association before getting your own coop. I know of several neighborhoods that allow hen houses, both downtown and in the suburbs. Some Lexington urban chicken keepers can be found downtown, in Aylesford, Kenwick, Bell Court and other areas. Other neighborhoods include Glendover, Pickway, Carriage Lane, Joyland (Kingston), and Shadeland. Click the links to see current homes for sale and then contact me to schedule a showing.

Remember, just because your neighbor has chickens does not mean the home owners association allows them. Be sure to check the restrictions first.

And if backyard farming leaves you wanting more, consider buying a home in the country with acreage or even a horse farm. Here’s my link to Kentucky Horse Farms, Land, and Properties for Sale.

The Jax Restaurant in Lexington Ky

The Jax Restaurant is on Short & Limestone

If you are considering moving to Lexington Ky, I can assure you there is no shortage of great restaurants here! Recently I had the pleasure of eating at The Jax for the first time. Located downtown at the corner of Short & Limestone, The Jax has been open for slightly more than a year. Owner Aimee Lovitz frequently played the classic game of jacks while growing up and named the restaurant to honor those fond memories. Her vision is to offer a wide variety of foods at varying price points so that there will be something for everyone. I appreciate the warm and inviting vibe from her and her restaurant.

There are at least four distinct areas to experience The Jax. Dining on the sidewalk while people-watching is a popular choice. We dined inside in a comfortable nook on the main floor. There is a VIP table on the mezzanine level, with the upper floor also open for dinner on weekends and for private parties during the week. The sitting area upstairs looked especially compelling. And then there’s the antique bar on the main floor made of walnut and marble!

The VIP table in the upper right overlooks the main dining room and views of downtown Lexington.

The global cuisine features intriguing selections such as Sage Almonds and Ricotta & Rhubard for appetizers, Kale Salad, and Salmon Santorini and the Bankok. Fresh and local ingredients along with a large dose of creativity translates into menu descriptions that include pistachios, coconut milk, brie and white wine sage sauce, golden raisins, candied walnuts, and agave cilantro sauce.

The Jax has a tempting dessert menu and a full bar with a wide selection of bourbon as well as signature cocktails. There are drink and food specials seven days a week.

Most Expensive Home Ever Sold in the U.S.!

Copper Beach Farm, Greenwich CT (photo taken from Forbes Magazine)

Copper Beach Farm, Greenwich CT (photo taken from Forbes Magazine)

We have gotten tremendous response from all of our featured “Top” blogs. Those include the top ten most expensive neighborhoods in the Lexington KY area and the top five most expensive homes for sale in the Lexington KY area. So we thought we would expand just a bit and bring you this feature on THE most expensive home ~ever~ to be sold in the U.S.! This unique 50 acre private estate features a 13,500 sq ft Victorian Mansion and is surrounded by waterfront and private gardens. The property includes its own small private nearby island for picnics or just ‘to get away’. It features 12 bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and 2 half baths,  a solarium, a wine cellar, and a three-story-high, wood-paneled foyer. According to the description by the Forbes Magazine article “most of the house’s rooms include fireplaces and sleeping porches, which were used as more breezy bedrooms during the oppressively hot summer months prior to air conditioning.” The grounds have incredible gardens, stone walls and more, lending a peaceful and, of course, amazingly private atmosphere to the entire setting.

The property originally was listed at $190 million, then reduced by $50 million to a final asking price of only $140 million, before finally selling (in less than one year) for $120,000,000.  To put that in perspective, residential real estate sales by members of the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of REALTORS® (LBAR)  in the first quarter of 2014 reported 781 sales totaling $150,732,623. So, as a unified entity, we actually surpassed this single sale with over 2500 active members working for three months!

Here’s a closer look at the property, along with a few words of interesting input from the exclusive listing agent on the pricing strategy:

Want to find YOUR perfect getaway?  I’m quite sure we can do it for less than $120 million here in beautiful Lexington KY, so just give me a call!  I’ve got a few top picks in mind that would give you a good run for your money…

Classic Kentucky Horse Farm Calumet’s Fate in Question

calumet lexington ky

homes for sale lexington kyCalumet Farm, one of Lexington’s most classic Kentucky Horse Farms, seems to be in a waiting place for its future to unfold. Long known for its presence adjoining Keeneland, some refer to it as the “gateway” farm for the farm indus

Calumet Farm has produced eight Kentucky Derby winners and two Triple Crown winners in its history, and has already been saved once from a development fate back in 1992 when the farm faced bankruptcy.

According to a recent article in the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky businessman Grad Kelley may have an offer in on the farm. And, as rumors go, there has been nothing to substantiate this.

One thing’s for sure…Calumet Farm is one of the most well-known and beloved Kentucky Horse Farms in all of the Bluegrass Region.  It represents all of the classic elements of Lexington and the Thoroughbred industry, and its destiny will undoubtedly be addressed by ‘the people’ if any development issues should come up in its future.

Lexington’s residents didn’t rest when the Webb Brothers attempted to put up a goliath skyscraper in the middle of downtown, and residents and members of the horse industry here will without question do whatever it takes to assist this wonderful icon from becoming anything other than what its history holds.

That’s part of what I love about living here in Lexington, KY.  The people speak and they are heard!  Some may call it a city, but to me it’s a ‘big town’, where plenty of ‘big stuff’ happens and yet individuals and groups still have a voice!
