Raising Triple Crown Winners in Lexington KY!

Mare and foal

Mare and foal

The Kentucky Derby may be over, but the Thoroughbred industry never stops! To that end, I recently had the opportunity to view Normandy Farm’s latest-born foals.  Normandy Farm sits on 254 acres of beautiful land that was formerly a part of the larger Elmendorf Farm next door, along with the third farm that adjoins it on the west side.  The original owner, Joseph Widner (who died in 1946) converted the farm from cattle to horses, and built a historic replica of the barn which he hid away in after being shot down over Normandy during World War I. What makes the barn unusual is its abundance of animal statues on the roof, just like those on the original barn in France. Their purpose is to ward off evil spirits and protect the horses.

This little filly is just two days old in this picture. Watch a video of it standing for the first time moments after it was born by going to the Normandy Farm Facebook page and clicking the May 5th video.

Normandy Farm currently houses about 19 mares, 14 of which are actively breeding. Breeding fees range from $20,000 to $120,000 each. Yearlings raised here have brought as high as $460,000 at recent auctions. Normandy’s owners send their yearlings to the annual Fasig-Tipton sales, as well as to the summer sales in Saratoga Springs, NY, where the selection of stock is hand-picked.

Mares can breed from as young as three years old and continue for as long as 20 + years. Owner Nancy Polk started her operation with just five inexpensive mares in 1997, and has continuously worked to upgrade her operation, taking the finest care of all of her mares and never putting any of them down after their breeding life has passed.

Watching the foals following their mamas within a few feet is the sweetest experience!  Their little ‘stick legs’ are almost surreal….and yet, one never knows where the next Kentucky superstar will come from.  So…onward to the next Triple Crown winner!

Classic Kentucky Horse Farm Calumet’s Fate in Question

calumet lexington ky

homes for sale lexington kyCalumet Farm, one of Lexington’s most classic Kentucky Horse Farms, seems to be in a waiting place for its future to unfold. Long known for its presence adjoining Keeneland, some refer to it as the “gateway” farm for the farm indus

Calumet Farm has produced eight Kentucky Derby winners and two Triple Crown winners in its history, and has already been saved once from a development fate back in 1992 when the farm faced bankruptcy.

According to a recent article in the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky businessman Grad Kelley may have an offer in on the farm. And, as rumors go, there has been nothing to substantiate this.

One thing’s for sure…Calumet Farm is one of the most well-known and beloved Kentucky Horse Farms in all of the Bluegrass Region.  It represents all of the classic elements of Lexington and the Thoroughbred industry, and its destiny will undoubtedly be addressed by ‘the people’ if any development issues should come up in its future.

Lexington’s residents didn’t rest when the Webb Brothers attempted to put up a goliath skyscraper in the middle of downtown, and residents and members of the horse industry here will without question do whatever it takes to assist this wonderful icon from becoming anything other than what its history holds.

That’s part of what I love about living here in Lexington, KY.  The people speak and they are heard!  Some may call it a city, but to me it’s a ‘big town’, where plenty of ‘big stuff’ happens and yet individuals and groups still have a voice!

Spring Foals at Kentucky Horse Farms

Well, it’s definitely Spring in Kentucky! There is absolutely nothing as cute as watching these newborn future race champions on their little stick legs following their Mamas around!

Just last week, I had the opportunity to join the Lexington KY Newcomers Club for a private tour of a Kentucky Horse Farm just popping with these adorable foals. By the way, you can join this fine club whether you are new to Lexington or not!  This wonderfully social group of folks has been arranging special tours of area sites, including some of our fine Kentucky Horse Farms, distilleries, orchards and more. This particular tour was one privately arranged, as this farm does not typically give any public tours, so join the club and have some fun!

I’m not going to babble on about how cute these newborn foals are…. Just see for yourself!

Words just can’t say it!  The Lexington KY and surrounding Bluegrass region are brimming with scenic farms and countryside.  One can drive for miles and miles and see nothing but these beautiful, well-kept Kentucky Horse Farms, emanating the “Kentucky Pride” that spills over from foals to friends.  I’ve lived in many parts of the country, and truly cannot describe how peaceful and calming it is just to be around this area.

Kentucky Horse Farms Industry Never Quits!

Like the overall housing market, the Kentucky Horse Farms industry has experienced its own set of challenges in the past few years. Even the Kentucky Horse Park, which hosted the first ever World Equestrian Games outside of Europe, has been challenged by the economics of the venture.

The good news is that [Read more…]

Finding the Uncommon Deal in KY

So what’s so different about buying property in Kentucky?  While the real estate market around the country has been in general upheaval for quite some time now, Kentucky has actually not experienced as severe a market change as some of the coastal states like Florida and California. In some of those areas predatory investors are pouncing on properties and the market has rapidly dropped out from under the average homeowner. The result of that is that many homeowners who once held the “American Dream” as sacred, can now personally testify that the reality of that dream can fast become a nightmare instead –especially those who have to make a move and can’t hang on through this huge dip in market values.

On the more positive side, a housing market such as Kentucky’s has proven to be more stable relative to some of the other regions mentioned. [Read more…]
