Raising Triple Crown Winners in Lexington KY!

The Kentucky Derby may be over, but the Thoroughbred industry never stops! To that end, I recently had the opportunity to view Normandy Farm’s latest-born foals.  Normandy Farm sits on 254 acres of beautiful land that was formerly a part of the larger Elmendorf Farm next door, along with the third farm that adjoins it on the west side.  The original owner, Joseph Widner (who died in 1946) converted the farm from cattle to horses, and built a historic replica of the barn which he hid away in after being shot down over Normandy during World War I. What makes the barn unusual is its abundance of animal statues on the roof, just like those on the original barn in France. Their purpose is to ward off evil spirits and protect the horses.

This little filly is just two days old in this picture. Watch a video of it standing for the first time moments after it was born by going to the Normandy Farm Facebook page and clicking the May 5th video.

Normandy Farm currently houses about 19 mares, 14 of which are actively breeding. Breeding fees range from $20,000 to $120,000 each. Yearlings raised here have brought as high as $460,000 at recent auctions. Normandy’s owners send their yearlings to the annual Fasig-Tipton sales, as well as to the summer sales in Saratoga Springs, NY, where the selection of stock is hand-picked.

Mares can breed from as young as three years old and continue for as long as 20 + years. Owner Nancy Polk started her operation with just five inexpensive mares in 1997, and has continuously worked to upgrade her operation, taking the finest care of all of her mares and never putting any of them down after their breeding life has passed.

Watching the foals following their mamas within a few feet is the sweetest experience!  Their little ‘stick legs’ are almost surreal….and yet, one never knows where the next Kentucky superstar will come from.  So…onward to the next Triple Crown winner!

One of the most expensive Kentucky horse farms for sale is Rosemont Farm. This historic horse farm on 462 acres includes an 1830s mansion, five barns with 74 stalls, a lake, and a gated entrance with tree-lined drives. This Kentucky horse farm is located on infamous Paris Pike, and is offered for $11,750,000. An iconic Kentucky jewel, it also has five outbuildings that can serve as offices or residences. The mansion has been lovingly restored and still has the original ash hardwood floors that are now nearly 200-years old. The 6700 sq ft two-story home features six impressive columns showcasing the front entrance, and a luxurious first-floor master bedroom. Much of the house has exquisite detailing such as built-ins, wainscoting and even a wood-paneled office.

Paris Pike is home to some of the most expensive real estate in Kentucky. This 14-mile scenic byway passes many gorgeous horse farms along the drive from Lexington to Paris. The gently rolling hills are also dotted with historic stone fences (stone walls) that were hand-built back in the slave era. A short drive along Paris Pike seems to be about all wealthy out-of-towners need before they decide to own a piece of historic Kentucky Bluegrass. If you were to purchase Rosemont Farm with 20% down, your monthly payments for a 30-year loan at 4.5% would still be in excess of $47,000! Luckily, there are plenty of Kentucky Horse Farms for sale in almost all price ranges.

Top Ten Reasons for Moving to Lexington Ky

homes for sale lexington ky

Here’s my Top Ten Reasons for moving to Lexington Ky (in no particular order)…!

(1)   Lexington KY offers the Best of both worlds!   Lexington offers a balance of country and city environments, easily accessible in just minutes. I’ve lived in a number of places (Western & Central Massachusetts, Chicago, mid-Michigan, Upstate NY, Atlanta), and the balance of city size and country access truly provides options for all, and the ability to cross back and forth into worlds when you need something a bit different.

(2)   Lexington KY offers Geographic convenience:  Easy access to the Interstate and central to this entire half of the country at least (yes, California, we know you exist!). Seriously, you can drive (in the better part of a day) to the coastal areas, Florida, New England and the Midwest. These all offer very different environments for those who enjoy travel and change. Of course, you can also hit Louisville or Cincinnati in little over an hour for those few things that you may not find here.

(3)   Lexington KY’s Population size: Personally, I have lived in some extremes….from a small town of about 700 people in an isolated location of Michigan, to a small city (Ithaca, NY – about 80,000 at the time) to the belly of Atlanta (about 4 million people).  At approximately 306,000, Lexington offers the benefits of a city with the feel of a ‘large town’.  This goes for traveling around and pockets of people and local familiarity as well.

(4)   Lexington KY’s Convenient Road System:  Being set up as a ‘spoke and wheel’ transportation template (vs. large city ‘grids’) allows easy access from any point to any other in no more than 20 minutes. Ever live in a big city and spend hours in your vehicle? Except for the occasional accident and a few traffic lights that could be timed a bit differently, you’ll find getting around relatively easy.

(5)   Lexington KY’s Range of Arts: Lexington, home of the Lexington Art League, offers a wide range of Art & Music interests, including the Lexington Art League’s  Loudon House Fourth Friday gatherings, to Gallery Hops, from the local bands at Al’s Bar to the growing the Lexington Distillery District  the Lexington Opera House, you can find a bit of it all…

(6)   Lexington KY’s Family Environment: If you’ve got kids, then you’ll love it here. Plenty of things to do from the Kentucky Horse Park just north of Lexington, to the Lexington Children’s Museum (now called the Explorium) downtown. There are lots of parks in the Lexington area, and special hidden treats like the Valley View Ferry, established in 1785…take a look here for a recent adventure!  and the Fayette County Public School System offers a wide range of educational opportunities place for raising a family, with a kid-friendly overall safe environment. There are lots of different neighborhoods as well. As a prime example, the Kenwick area offers close proximity to downtown,  the charm of older architecture (featured annually in the Kenwick Bungalow Tour  and active neighborhood association where it’s clear that one concerned voice can make a difference!

(7)   Lexington KY’s Climate balance: Yes, we’ve been having a bit of ‘extreme’ winter compared to past years, but overall Lexington’s location offers a reasonable balance of the four seasons, with a somewhat even time span on those…just enough of a feel for each!

(8)   Lexington KY’s Hiking & biking: It’s becoming easier and more bike-friendly to get around Lexington, with projects like Town Branch Trail 8 mile bike/walking trail and the bike-friendly bus system. If you’re into outdoor hiking, you can pop over to Raven Run Nature Sanctuary just 10 minutes south of town, or head out to Red River Gorge (‘the little Grand Canyon’) to hike or climb. Cave Run Lake also offers hiking, boating and fishing, as well as Herrington Lake and Lake Cumberland, about an hour’s drive on those.

(9)   Lexington KY’s Sense of History: While we may not have the centuries of old history to the extent of Old New England, but there is most definitely a solid history here being in the heart of “Bluegrass Country”. Everywhere you drive on any side of Lexington, the sense of  “Kentucky Pride” can be felt, with miles and miles of manicured horse farms and fencing, and pastoral views of grazing horses everywhere!

(10)  Lexington KY’s Overall ambiance: Horses! Whether you are involved with them directly or not, one can’t help but admit that there is a certain unexplained energy that horses bring….a sense of peace passing them by grazing in fields everywhere, a sense of excitement and exhilaration watching them run at Keeneland Race Track, or just a sense of charm and history riding in or watching the horse and buggies downtown. It’s Lexington,  Horse Capital of the World…come and enjoy it with us!

(11)  Did I say just TEN Top Reasons?  What about The People!   The people are what you might expect…a nice blend of city and country. They’ll actually stop and talk to you (if you take the time), and interact with some kind of unspoken southern hospitality. But beware if you’re a fast moving Yankee (like me)…you might get caught up in the stories and not get your list for the day done!

Spring Foals at Kentucky Horse Farms

Well, it’s definitely Spring in Kentucky! There is absolutely nothing as cute as watching these newborn future race champions on their little stick legs following their Mamas around!

Just last week, I had the opportunity to join the Lexington KY Newcomers Club for a private tour of a Kentucky Horse Farm just popping with these adorable foals. By the way, you can join this fine club whether you are new to Lexington or not!  This wonderfully social group of folks has been arranging special tours of area sites, including some of our fine Kentucky Horse Farms, distilleries, orchards and more. This particular tour was one privately arranged, as this farm does not typically give any public tours, so join the club and have some fun!

I’m not going to babble on about how cute these newborn foals are…. Just see for yourself!

Spring Foal springs into action at Kentucky Horse Farm

Words just can’t say it!  The Lexington KY and surrounding Bluegrass region are brimming with scenic farms and countryside.  One can drive for miles and miles and see nothing but these beautiful, well-kept Kentucky Horse Farms, emanating the “Kentucky Pride” that spills over from foals to friends.  I’ve lived in many parts of the country, and truly cannot describe how peaceful and calming it is just to be around this area.

KY Horse Weekend Trifecta!

Wow! What a full weekend of exciting horse events in Kentucky! At Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, Drosselmeyer came out of nowhere to win the $5 Million Breeder’s Cup Classic. As are all horse races, this three year old race proved to be unpredictable and exciting.

On a somewhat quieter front, but no less exciting, 200 under 18 riders from around the country competed in the AllTech National Horse Show, held for the first time at the Kentucky Horse Park just north of Lexington. Sarah Milliren, an Oklahoma teen, took the top honors. [Read more…]

Kentucky Horse Farms and Horse Events Abound!

Not only is Kentucky world-famous for its amazing Bluegrass and Kentucky Horse Farms, but it’s reputation continues to rise in the world of Equestrian events.  The once world-famous Madison Square Garden National Horse Show, which for years captured the attention of horse-lovers in the 1950’s, is now moving this year’s event to the KY Horse Park on the north side of Lexington.

“The National”, as last Sunday’s Lexington Herald-Leader pointed out, was a huge tradition for many years. It brought breath-taking moments to light, like U.S. Equestrian Team Member Bill Steinkraus’  world record-breaking 7′ 3″ jump.

Bill Steinkraus' Record Breaking 7'3" Nationals Jump

But the horse culture of the 1950’s subsided with the advent of many other high profile sports events like auto racing and other internationally broadcast competitions. [Read more…]
