Get locally made cheese at Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky

Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky.
Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky.

A variety of fresh cheeses are handmade at the Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky.

With only a handful of cheesemakers in the state, we are lucky to have Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky. Their products are served at some of the finest restaurants in town. Top chefs in Louisville, Nashville, and other cities in the Midwest are also buyers of such flavors as blue, cheddar, Guyere,  and gouda. One of the things that sets master cheesemaker Ed Puterbaugh apart is his creative recipes -and names for his products. Among the forty varieties offered is Cardinal Sin, Mama Mia, and Sassy Redhead. The names do all make sense, though. For example, Kentucky Derby is Derby cheese infused with mint and bourbon.

All products are made by hand using no machinery. In fact they use the same labor-intensive methods as were done hundreds of years ago. The cheese is made from organic milk that came from local grass-fed cows. The milk has not been homogenized and only slightly pasturized (at a low temperature for a short time). Boone Creek Creamery also offers cheese making classes and sells the necessary equipment and ingredients for you to make your own.

The Creamery is one of the very few urban cheesemakers in the country. Boone Creek Creamery is located at 2416 Palumbo Drive. The public is welcome to visit the cheese factory (and buy cheese of course) between 9-5 Monday through Friday. Cheese can also be purchased online from their website.

After visiting the cheese shop, you may be interested in homes for sale in this area. Neighborhoods in the vicinity are only about four miles from the center of town with easy access to the rest of town via New Circle Road and Man O’War. The two main arteries of Richmond and Winchester Roads are also convenient. If you are a first time homebuyer, you may be interested in one of the 18 homes for sale within 1/2 mile of the Boone Creek Creamery in Lexington Ky. Ranging from $57,000 to $141,000 they are in the following neighborhoods: Shady Hills, Liberty Hill, Liberty Heights, Woodhill, Danby Corners, Shadow Wood, and Pleasant Ridge. Stella’s Deli in Lexington Ky

Stella’s Deli in Lexington Ky

Stella’s Deli in Lexington Ky is a local favorite. You’ll find good quality food that is fresh and local at this cute little downtown eatery. Officially named Stella’s Kentucky Deli, it’s a great casual place to meet friends or grab a quick bite. Diners can sit at the counter, in the informal dining room, or at one of several tables set up in a small room to the side. Located in what was once a Victorian home, the building stands out with its brightly painted colors.

Depending on the day of the week, Stella’s serves brunch, lunch and dinner, or some combination thereof. It’s no accident that “Kentucky” is their middle name as many dishes and drinks honor the Bluegrass state. Grits are milled locally, bourbon is a key ingredient in French toast and coffee, and there is a Kentucky Hot Brown (which can also be ordered vegetarian).

The lunch menu is full of creative twists on classic dishes. For example, the Griff Burger is topped with apple slices, blue cheese, and bacon –all of it locally-sourced. Besides offering a selection of soups and salads, there are intriguing items such as a Candy Bar Sandwich (peanut butter and Nutella) and a Fried Green Tomato BLT. Be sure to save room for the homemade desserts!

The dinner menu features Kentucky Cassoulet and Beef Bourguignon. Stella’s also serves beer, wine and cocktails.

Stella’s Deli in Lexington Ky is part of the thriving Jefferson Street restaurant district, a newly revitalized area. Just west of downtown, this is a great part of town to buy a house. Homes for sale in this up and coming area range from $20,000 to nearly $2 million –all within 1/2 mile of the restaurant. Do you know about Waveland in Lexington Ky?

homes for sale near waveland lexington ky

homes for sale near waveland lexington ky

Now that Kentucky is growing hemp again, did you know that the biggest producer of rope and hemp was right here in Lexington at Waveland? The property, south of downtown, was named for the way the fields of hemp on the property waved in the breeze on what was once 2000 acres. According to family tradition, Daniel Boone surveyed the original 2,000-acre grant for his nephew, Daniel Boone Bryan (1758-1845), a renowned frontiersman, historian and poet who built the original home at Waveland. Two years after Daniel Bryan’s death, his son, Joseph Bryan, Sr., tore down the old stone house and began construction on the Waveland mansion in 1848. This home of the same name as the original, and built by Daniel Boone’s grand-nephew, is a two-story Greek Revival mansion with fourteen rooms. Waveland has many opulent features such as tall ceilings, decorative work and wrought iron. Original plans called for marble baseboards however to save costs, stones were painted to look like marble. For more specifics on its construction and history, click here.

The Waveland property is now ten acres and it and the mansion are open to the public as a state-run historic site. Several outbuildings survive from the 1800s including a servant’s quarters, blacksmith shop, and ice house. Click the Waveland Museum link for tours and information.

Just six miles south of downtown, the Waveland area offers the best of both worlds as residents enjoy rural living with all the city conveniences close by. If you lived in the area, the booming Nicholasville Road shopping corridor would be less than ten minutes away. Just beyond the shopping area which includes Fayette Mall, Lexington Green, and soon Lexington Summit, is New Circle Road, Lexington’s beltway that encircles our town. The other direction on Nicholasville Road leads into the town of the same name.

Walk to the Grocery Store in Lexington Ky!

Recently I showed a property to a client who was thrilled that it was located less than a half mile from a Kroger grocery store. One would think that feature would appeal only to the elderly, but my client was young. In fact, being able to walk to shopping is a plus for all ages. After all, you save gas and get some exercise. Lexington doesn’t get a lot of snowfall so residents can walk to the grocery store practically year round. Food stores are typically in plazas where shoppers will find other retail options, usually a bank, dry cleaner, nail salon, and restaurants. Here are some of the grocery stores in town along with their surrounding neighborhoods. Each neighborhood listed is one half mile or less from the market.

Critchfield Meats is a Lexington Ky landmark! Critchfield’s has been in business since 1969 and is Lexington’s main provider of meats. Their wide selection of fresh and local meats include ground beef, pork chops, steaks, fish, chicken , turkey, sausages, and lamb. They can provide all the sides such as baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and desserts such as homemade pies and cakes. The store also sells dips, cheeses, marinades, and sauces. Did you know that they are the main supplier of meats to Lexington’s top restaurants? They supply a fair number of restaurants in the Central Kentucky area as well. I was surprised to learn they have an online ordering and shipping department. They ship their products across the nation and even internationally.

Critchfield Meats in Lexington Ky is located  in the Zandale Shopping Center south of downtown on Nicholasville Road. If you are moving to Lexington, this is a great location to consider. Ashland Park is one of Lexington’s best-known neighborhoods. It is located about 1.5 miles from the city center and is one of the top ten most expensive neighborhoods in Lexington Ky.

Ashland Park is a 600-acre neighborhood designed in the early 1900s by the Olmstead Brothers, who also designed many famous parks and roadways. Much emphasis was given to landscaping, curving roads, and shade trees. A cornerstone of the park is Henry Clay’s estate of the same name, which sits in the northeast corner of the neighborhood. The Henry Clay Estate consists of an 18-room mansion built in 1857 on 20-acres of parkland. The grounds, which include a walled garden, are open to the public and are the site of events such as croquet and classic card shows. The mansion is open for tours and has a cafe open for lunch in the warmer months.
