Nothing beats a hot bowl of soup after being out in the cold all day. There are some great places to get soup in town including Caldo in Lexington Ky. This new business that opened last year is part of a big nutrition craze that’s all about bone broth. People in LA and New York are drinking it for better health and there are even broth stands in Central Park. Regular consumption of broth is claimed to help your joints, strengthen your bones, improve your complexion, and build better immunity.

I think it’s cool that Lexington is in on this hot new trend! Caldo serves their broth in a cup so you can drink it as you would coffee or other hot beverage. Flavors include chicken, beef, miso, and ginger with the option to add extras such as chili oil, lemon, fish sauce or tomato paste. You can get your broth cold or even in a smoothie. You’ll also find salads, granola and coffee on the menu with everything centered around the intention of harnessing the healing powers of whole foods. Caldo is locally owned by a well-known chef and caterer who also owns Wild Thyme, a popular gourmet cooking shop.

The broth shop is located in the booming Warehouse Block shopping district just east of downtown. This recently renovated area is full of small locally owned businesses including National Provisions French bakery, market and beer hall (formally National Boulangerie), Designs Unlimited Jewelry, a trumpet maker, Breakout Games, Locals bar, and many more. If you lived in any of the nearby neighborhoods you could walk to the gym, bakery, as well as the other shops. Neighborhoods within a half mile of Caldo in Lexington Ky include Kenwick, Mentelle Park, Bell Court, and Ashland Park. Most homes in the area are bungalows and brick houses about 100 years old. Construction continues as part of a $7 million expansion at Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

A new 25,000 square foot brewhouse is being built atop of existing buildings at Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky

Bourbon is known around the world as a Kentucky product (95% of all bourbon is made here) and the Bourbon Trail is popular with tourists from both near and far. Did you know that many of these same tourists are also visiting local breweries? The craft beer movement is growing strong and we happen to have at least six local breweries in town, referred to as “The Brewgrass Trail.” Here’s the scoop on our first craft brewery,  Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky:

Their official name is Alltech Lexington Brewery and Distilling and they make ten beers and four bourbons. The company is located on the corner of Maxwell and Oliver Lewis Parkway. As you can see by these pictures there’s lots of construction going on.

The downtown brewery opened in 2000 with the launch of Kentucky Ale. Kentucky Light soon followed and in 2006 Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale was introduced. All three beers have won awards and are distributed across Kentucky and into surrounding states. In 2012, the $4.5 million distillery opened. The 20,000 facility produces and stores Pearce Lyon Reserve, Town Branch Reserve, and Town Branch Rye. They also make Bluegrass Sundown: a unique bourbon-infused coffee concentrate. The facility is one of the very few “brewstilleries” in the world, with both brewing and distillery production happening at the same place!

This latest construction is part of a $7.5 million expansion. A new 25,000 square foot brewhouse is being built on top of existing buildings. Lots of glass is incorporated in the design so people driving by can see the processing tanks.

Tours are seven days a week and last about an hour. The standard tour includes a tasting. There are also specialty tours led by the Master Brewer, Master Distiller, or both. These private group tours provide an in-depth look at each step of the process.

Alltech Brewing in Lexington Ky is located on Cross Street off of Maxwell on the west side of town. Residents who live in the area can walk to Rupp Arena, the thriving Jefferson Street corridor (see my recent post about the Apiary and the Jefferson Street area), and the arts and entertainment district of downtown. Homes for sale within walking distance of the brewstillery can be found in the Downtown and Woodward Heights neighborhoods.

Lexington Ky Voted Top Five Best Small City to Retire

top ten reasons to move to lexington ky

Lexington Ky was recently named a top city to retire.

Lexington Ky sure has been getting a lot of good publicity lately. We’ve been rated as one of the best cities to start a new life, one of the cleanest in the world, and one of the most educated cities in the U.S. The latest buzz is that Money Magazine ranks Lexington Ky one of the top five best small cities to retire.

Here’s why:

1. Lexington is the perfect size. At a population of 308,000 we are not too big nor too small. We offer all the conveniences of big city living without the traffic—  or the high prices. We have a vibrant downtown which, as the article states, is “packed with galleries, restaurants, and boutiques.”

2. Lexington is surrounded by horse farms and the rolling hills of the Kentucky Bluegrass area. Drive 15 minutes in any direction from downtown and find yourself surrounded by rural countryside.

3. Lexington has relatively low taxes including low sales tax, property tax, and income tax. Lexington is a very affordable city- and my out of town home buyers tell me this all the time!

4. Retirees go to college for free by taking advantage of the renowned Lifelong Learning program at the University of Kentucky. This nationally acclaimed program allows seniors to sit in on college classes at no charge.

5. Lexington is home to one of the nation’s best hospitals, UK Chandler Healthcare.

What Money Magazine does not talk about are the many FUN things to do in Lexington KY! These range from watching the horse races at Keeneland to visiting the local wineries, bourbon distilleries, and craft breweries. There’s fabulous biking and motorcycle touring in the area, plus hiking and canoeing…not to mention our thriving arts scene!

The article recommends retirees live in downtown Lexington. While downtown has many modern condos, I would advise seniors to not limit themselves to the center of town. There are many areas that may be even more suitable. I have been selling real estate here for 14 years so if you are planning on moving to Lexington Ky call me to learn more about particular neighborhoods.

If taking free college classes is high on your list in your retired life, take a look at these neighborhoods that are convenient to UK. Click the link to see homes for sale near the University of Kentucky.

Horsin’ around at the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington Ky

bluegrass airport lexington ky

bluegrass airport lexington ky

If you’ve ever visited the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington Ky, you may have noticed the huge mosaic on the floor of the main entrance on the way to the security line. The floor tile traces the lineage of North America’s most prominent Thoroughbred horses, honoring many Central Kentucky racehorses.  Thoroughbreds are known for racing and were originally developed in the late 1600s in England with the first ones arriving in the U.S. in 1730. The famous race horse Lexington was born here in 1850 and was known for being a very successful stud horse after his racing retirement. He is, in fact, a big reason why Lexington is known as the “Horse Capital of the World“. He continues to be remembered with the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and the Belmont Lexington Stakes at the Belmont Racetrack in New York. The mosaic has the names of all the major players in horse racing including Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Unbridled, Mr. Prospector, and Seattle Slew. Bluegrass Airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the nation and serves over one million travelers a year. It is 1000 acres surrounded by horse farms and yet just 15 minutes from downtown

The floor mosaic at the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington Ky matches the design of this poster.

Across from the airport is the Keeneland Racetrack where you can watch today’s up and coming Thoroughbreds race in the lead up to the 2014 Breeder’s Cup. The Keeneland Fall Meet continues now through October 25th. Incidentally, the 2015 Breeder’s Cup will be held right at here at Keeneland- the first time the Lexington track has hosted the event.

If you are thinking of moving to Lexington Ky, you could not have picked a better time of year to be house hunting. Enjoy the track, the rolling hills of horse farms, visit a winery or apple orchard, and then call me to help you find your dream home. My cell is 859.321.7202.
